Both CBD and hemp are extracted from the cannabis plant, but few people know the difference between the two. So, is CBD the same as hemp oil? Aside from being manufactured differently, CBD and hemp also have different uses and benefits. Here’s what each one does, and the one big difference between them.
The big difference
The best way to understand the difference between CBD and hemp is to look at the way they are made.
CBD oil is extracted from the cannabis plant, using different parts of it, like the flowers and stalks. In order to activate the CBD and other cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis, the product has to be heated up and processed. There are a couple of ways to do that, including CO2 extraction (the safest method) and solvent extraction.
The resulting product is a concentrated CBD extract, which is usually mixed in with a carrier oil and sold as CBD oil.
So how is this process different from hemp oil?
Well, to start with, hemp oil is extracted using only the seeds of the cannabis plant. Like other vegetable oils such as sunflower or olive, it is generally obtained through a method called cold pressing. Using this technique, hemp seeds are crushed and filtered until all that remains is the oil they contain.
This pure hemp seed oil is not usually mixed with any other oils. It’s often packaged in a bottle and can be used in cooking or as a dietary supplement.
Because none of the cannabinoid compounds of cannabis have been activated in the process, hemp oil doesn’t contain CBD, THC, or any other cannabinoid.
Why you need to understand the difference
Today, many people are confused about the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil. This is in large part the fault of manufacturers and marketers.
Over the past couple of years, CBD has rapidly grown in popularity. Boasting the ability to help with a number of conditions (more on that later), and to increase overall well-being, the demand for it has increased massively. The only problem? Creating quality CBD oil comes at a cost,and consumers who aren’t fully sold on the idea yet may not be ready to pay dozens of dollars on a small bottle of CBD oil.
That’s why marketers frequently try to sell hemp seed oil as CBD oil, using similar packaging for both products or calling it “cannabis oil.” But don’t be fooled. If you can’t find “cannabidiol,” “broad-spectrum” or “full-spectrum” on the ingredient list, the product you’re about to buy is not CBD oil, but rather hemp seed oil.
This is not to say that hemp seed oil doesn’t have any benefits. In fact, it’s a product that can also be used as a supplement for its many health properties. But you need to know what you’re paying for, and what you want to get out of the product.
Benefits of CBD
When it comes to medicinal benefits, CBD is a definite winner in the CBD vs. hemp debate. The list of conditions that it can treat is expanding every day, making it difficult to summarize them all. But the conditions it’s most useful for are:
- Fight inflammation (helping with conditions like IBS, arthritis and acne)
- Prevent epilepsy
- Alleviate stress and anxiety
- Stop nausea
- Decrease chronic pain
Many people like to take it every day to alleviate chronic physical health conditions (like chronic pain, arthritis and IBS) or mental ones (depression, anxiety, PTSD and panic disorders). Others take CBD oil occasionally to help with insomnia, pain or inflammation.
Used as a topical, CBD is particularly useful for treating skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne and redness. It can also help with sore muscles and sunburns.
CBD is legal on a federal level in the United States, as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. However, it is still prohibited by certain state laws and doesn’t have FDA approval. We encourage you to consult a physician before you start taking CBD.
Benefits of hemp oil
Hemp oil or hemp seed oil has a wide array of benefits for the body and for skincare.
Some people like to use it in their cooking, while others recommend drinking a spoonful of it every day. When ingested, the benefits of hemp seed oil include:

- Reducing appetite
- Regulating hormones, particularly in women
- Strengthening joints and bones
- Improving the health of skin, nails and hair
Although hemp seed oil doesn’t have the same range of benefits as CBD oil, it can certainly be very beneficial. Some people claim it’s the healthiest oil you can use in salads.
When used topically, hemp oil is a great moisturizer that restores the skin’s moisture barrier without clogging pores. Many use it as face oil, as it has many of the same skincare benefits as CBD oil for a fraction of the price.
CBD oil vs. hemp oil: what’s the big difference? Although both types of oils have a range of therapeutic benefits for the body and skin, their use is quite different. CBD oil can be used as a real form of medicine, effectively treating conditions like epilepsy or Crohn’s disease. On the other hand, hemp seed oil is more of a dietary supplement, or as some call it, a superfood. It can improve the body’s working but isn’t necessarily a form of treatment.
All of this is due to their manufacturing process, which differs greatly. In particular, CBD oil is “activated” to make its cannabinoids bioavailable, while hemp oil doesn’t contain any. So which one should you choose? It’s really up to you and what you want to get out of it. But remember to be careful when reading the packaging, and don’t purchase hemp seed oil for the price of CBD.
