CBD for Sex | Does CBD help Sexually?

How CBD for libido can enhance your sex life

We’ve heard of using CBD to treat anxiety, pain and depression. We’ve even heard that it can treat conditions like epilepsy, Crohn’s disease and arthritis. But when it comes to sex, fewer people have tried it. This is a great shame considering CBD can make sex not just more comfortable, but also a lot more enjoyable. With powerful anti-anxiety effects, CBD also heightens your senses and decreases pain to multiply your pleasure. Here’s what you need to know about using CBD for sex.

CBD boosts libido

A healthy libido is an important part of a healthy sex life. Research shows that the more sexually aroused we are, the more likely we are to experience orgasms. So aphrodisiacs, or products that boost your libido, can also help you improve your sex life.

Strictly speaking, CBD is not an aphrodisiac. But it can help to bring your libido back to a normal level, whether it is too high or too low. Studies show that the endocannabinoid system extends to all areas of the body and that many receptors can be found in the area of the genitals. As a result, researchers suspect that CBD can help to regulate your sex drive by restoring balance in the endocannabinoid system.

Heightened senses mean stronger orgasms

When CBD enters your system, it gives a boost to your endocannabinoid system. One of the results of that action is that it gets more blood flowing through your body. This 2017 study found that just a single dose of CBD could help to reduce blood pressure. The researchers suspect that CBD relaxes your arteries. As a result, your blood is able to flow more freely. And of course, this also has consequences for sex!

Increased blood flow to the genitalia can make sex a lot more enjoyable for both men and women. For women, increased blood flow to the clitoris makes it more sensitive, making it easier to experience sexual pleasure and orgasms. For men, more blood flow means a stronger erection and more sensitivity in the penis.

CBD is particularly good for women, who tend to struggle to reach an orgasm. Studies show that feeling comfortable, relaxed and aroused are the three main factors that determine how much sexual pleasure women feel. By applying just a few drops of CBD oil or spray onto the genitals, women can get all these effects at once in the form of increased relaxation and blood flow. As a result, you can expect more pleasure and stronger orgasms.

Relaxation and performance anxiety

Relaxation and performance anxiety

When it comes to having an enjoyable sexual experience, the mental aspect is as important as the physical. Feeling enthusiastic, confident and comfortable is the surest way to have a good time with your partner and experience more pleasure. And of course, feeling anxious or self-conscious can have the opposite effect, making it harder to relax enough to experience an orgasm.

Everyday stress and worry can of course get in the way of healthy sex life. And then there’s performance anxiety. This term describes feeling anxious about the way you act in the bedroom, or worrying that you’re not good enough for your partner. Performance anxiety can be caused by a lack of self-confidence, but also by unrealistic expectations set by pornography and the media.

So it’s no wonder that CBD, a molecule with known anti-anxiety effects, can help you have better sex. CBD has effects on anxiety on both the short and long term. In the short term, even a single dose of CBD could help to reduce stress and anxiety. In this 2019 study, researchers gave a high dose of CBD to volunteers before subjecting them to a public speaking test. Compared to the control group, those who had taken 300 mg of CBD reported feeling a lot less anxious during the test, which their metrics (blood pressure and heart rate) confirmed. So if you’re thinking of taking CBD for sex, even consuming an edible a few minutes or hours before getting in the bedroom could make a bit difference.

CBD for anxiety also works in the long term. This 2019 study showed that patients who were given CBD daily had lower stress levels after a month. So if you’re suffering from chronic anxiety and it’s getting in the way of your sex life, CBD could provide long-term relief.

CBD lowers pain

For most people, pain and pleasure don’t mix well. When you’re suffering from any type of pain, it can be hard to get in the mood and relax enough to get pleasure from sexual contact. People who suffer from chronic pain often find it difficult to have sex, especially when they’re not getting proper pain relief. Fortunately, CBD can help with many different types of pain, including inflammatory and neuropathic pain. This means CBD could really provide relief for chronic pain patients

Other people suffer from pain that is directly linked to sex. For example, women with endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome may find that penetration causes them a lot of pain. Others suffer from muscle spasms during sex, which can make intercourse difficult. If this is something you experience, you might be able to get relief from taking CBD edibles before sex, or from using a CBD-based lubricant during sex.

What is CBD? And how does it work?

What is CBD? a substance extracted from the cannabis plant. It is very rich in a cannabinoid compound known as cannabidiol or CBD. CBD is best known for its extensive medicinal uses, which include:

  • Preventing seizures
  • Treating arthritis
  • Alleviating pain
  • Decreasing anxiety

Unlike THC, another well-known cannabinoid compound, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that while it can affect your mind and body, it won’t cause significant changes in perception and make you feel “high.”

Taking CBD before sex isn’t like taking a recreational drug. It’s more like supplementing with a natural substance that can help things go a bit smoother.

CBD is legal on a federal level in the United States, as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. However, it is still prohibited by certain state laws and doesn’t have FDA approval. We encourage you to consult a physician before you start taking CBD.

What are the benefits of CBD for sex?

CBD is full of benefits for all aspects of mental and physical health. To understand why, we need to introduce you to the endocannabinoid system, or ECS.

What are the benefits of CBD for sex?

The endocannabinoid system is a biological system that runs through the whole body. It helps to regulate things like appetite, mood, pain and inflammation.

This system is very receptive to cannabinoid. So when we introduce substances like CBD into our bodies, these molecules bind to special ECS receptors and affect its working. As a result, we find that consuming CBD can boost the ECS, lowering pain, inflammation, and stress response, among other things.

This can have repercussions on our sex lives: after all, pain, inflammation, and low mood are all things that can make it more difficult to have sex. The four main ways in which CBD can work for sex are:

  • Boosting libido
  • Increasing blood flow
  • Relaxing the body and mind
  • Lowering pain

CBD products for sex

So how can you take CBD for sex? You have a lot of options when it comes to products. From CBD tinctures to teas, vapes or massage oils, you’ll have to find the product that works best for you. Here, we’ll be classifying them into two main categories: products you ingest, and products you apply on the skin.

Topicals

These products are applied directly to the skin and can provide fast relief from pain and inflammation. For sex, the most useful topical products are CBD lubricants and CBD massage oils.

CBD lubricants

CBD lubricants can transform your sex life by boosting blood flow to the genitals and making you more relaxed. They may be particularly useful for women, who can find penetration painful if their vagina is not relaxed enough. A CBD lubricant will relax all the muscles around the genital area and increase blood flow, essentially facilitating sex of any kind.

You can also expect a CBD lubricant to spice up your sex life with some new sensations. People who use it report experiencing a deep warming sensation and a slight tingle that can be very fun.

And then there are women who suffer from pain during intercourse because of other conditions. CBD lubricants could help them by relieving pain and inflammation. So far, studies on the use of topical CBD for sex lubrication are still lacking. However, we have insights from other studies on topical CBD. For example, this 2016 study on rats with arthritis found that a topical CBD cream relieved pain. This study from 2010 also showed the benefits of topical CBD, this time for inflammation. It shows that CBD can lower inflammation in the skin and the area surrounding it when applied in the form of a cream.

What this tells us is that CBD lubricants could make your sex life more comfortable, particularly if you suffer from pain or inflammatory types of pain (such as those caused by endometriosis) during sex.

CBD massage oils

Massages can be a great way to get relaxed before sex, which could make it much more pleasurable. They can also be of great help for people with sex-related anxiety, trauma or performance anxiety. By using a CBD massage oil, you could be getting double the benefits: the natural relaxation brought on by the massage, plus the relaxing effects of CBD.

Edibles

The most popular way to take CBD remains as an edible: by placing a few drops of a CBD oil or tincture under the tongue for a few minutes. This method is known as sublingual consumption and has a lot of benefits. First, it makes CBD very bioavailable, meaning that our bodies can absorb more of the substance. Second, it’s usually one of the most affordable ways to get CBD into your system.

That being said, there are also a couple of alternatives to CBD oils for those who don’t like the taste or who want something more fun. Those include:

  • CBD mouth sprays
  • CBD chewables like gummy bears or chewing gum
  • CBD edibles like cookies and candy

And for those who already enjoy smoking or vaping, using CBD e-liquid in a vape can be a good option too. It helps to get CBD into your body fast and efficiently and can be a fun way to consume it throughout the day.

Takeaways

Is CBD for sex just another fad? So far, the effects of CBD for sex are still under-researched. But the data that we have on CBD for pain, inflammation, anxiety and blood flow shows very promising benefits. CBD could help to relax you before sex, soothe any pain, and increase blood flow for a stimulant effect. So if your sex life needs a boost or if you just want to try something new, why not give CBD a chance?
